Wooden Hill Primary and Nursery School

Science

At Wooden Hill, we want to spark your child’s natural curiosity about the world around them. Our science lessons are designed to be a journey of discovery—starting with simple questions and building into a deeper understanding of how nature and technology work. Our core purpose is to actively encourage children to formulate and investigate 'big questions' that fundamentally underpin each learning journey, allowing them to make scientific connections and deepen their understanding of the world around them. This is reinforced through rich, practical experiences that enable students to investigate and answer these questions. We place a high value on developing communication, requiring children to confidently use appropriate scientific vocabulary when explaining their theories, and making predictions.

Furthermore, we aim to inspire future engagement by actively recognising a career in science as a viable and valuable pathway, demonstrating the diversity of roles and contributions within STEM fields. This is supported by dedicated learning about significant scientists throughout history and modern times, exploring their discoveries and the methods they used to advance human knowledge.

A central pillar of our curriculum is the explicit development of science enquiry skills, empowering students to plan, conduct and present findings across the five recognised types of scientific enquiry:

  • Comparative and Fair Testing
  • Observing over time
  • Identifying and Classifying
  • Pattern Seeking
  • Researching

Ultimately, our ambition is to ensure students recognise the relevance of their science learning to the wider world and its impact on technological, environmental and societal issues, establishing a foundation for lifelong scientific engagement.
